The Spätburgunder Köndringer Alte Burg Großes Gewächs 2022 from Bernhard Huber ranks among Germany’s finest red wines and stands as a benchmark for top-level German Burgundian craftsmanship. As a VDP.Großes Gewächs, it represents the highest quality category awarded by the VDP association: dry wines from the very best classified sites, produced under strict yield limits and rigorous selection standards. The “Alte Burg” parcel in Köndringen, south of Malterdingen, was deliberately planted with selected Burgundian clones and benefits from pale yellow shell-limestone and loess soils, as well as an open, breezy exposure. These conditions promote small, highly aromatic berries and a precise expression of terroir. In the glass, the 2022 vintage shows a deep ruby colour with clear intensity. On the nose, it unfolds a layered bouquet of dark cherries, ripe forest berries and cassis, supported by spicy nuances, delicate herbal notes, a hint of dark chocolate and mineral undertones. This interplay of fruit and savoury depth delivers the complexity that defines great Spätburgunder. On the palate, this Großes Gewächs impresses with a finely structured texture, featuring silky, fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity and juicy, precise fruit. The mineral tension of the site is clearly present, adding freshness and length. Ageing for around 16 months in Burgundian barriques, including a significant proportion of new oak, enhances complexity without overshadowing the wine’s freshness. Overall, Köndringer Alte Burg 2022 is an intense yet elegant Spätburgunder of outstanding precision, character and long-term ageing potential – an excellent example of German Großes Gewächs at an international level.
