The Sauvignon DOC Porphyr & Kalk 2024 from Niedrist is an expressive Alto Adige Sauvignon Blanc that precisely reflects the distinctive character of its terroir. The wine’s name refers to the soils where the vines grow: a unique combination of volcanic porphyry and limestone-rich subsoil, which gives the wine notable minerality and structure. The grapes are grown on the east-facing slopes of Eppan Berg as well as in Girlan and Rungg, and are hand-harvested to ensure only the best fruit is selected. In the glass, the 2024 vintage shows a pale golden yellow colour with subtle amber nuances. On the nose, it offers a clear, elegantly composed aromatic profile with notes of gooseberry, fine herbs and peach, creating an expression that is fresh yet complex. This interplay of fruit and herbal character is typical of high-quality Sauvignon Blanc, here further enhanced by the mineral imprint of the soils. On the palate, the wine is lively, fresh and structured, driven by a clear acidity and a pronounced minerality that adds tension and length. The texture is fine yet firmly shaped, and the finish is persistent, with a distinctly saline-mineral edge that highlights the character of this Sauvignon.
