Pétalos 2005 from Palacios is an iconic Bierzo wine that played a major role in revealing the potential of the mencía grape on the high-altitude terroirs of north-west Spain. Sourced from old vines grown on slate and clay-limestone soils and crafted with great precision, this now fully mature 2005 vintage offers a deep, elegant and beautifully resolved expression.
The colour shows a dark ruby core with garnet highlights, gently evolved at the rim. The nose is intense and complex, revealing ripe dark fruits — blackberry, blueberry and plum — intertwined with floral notes, liquorice, gentle spices and warm stone. With age, tertiary nuances of forest floor, fine leather and cocoa add depth and nobility.
On the palate, the wine is broad, silky and remarkably well balanced. The tannins are fine and fully integrated, supporting a dense yet elegant structure. Flavours of dark fruits, dried herbs, mineral notes and spices unfold with precision. The finish is long, persistent and harmonious, leaving a sense of controlled freshness and refined elegance.
