Description

Michel Couvreur Overaged Malt Whisky is a daring and distinctive expression that bridges Scottish tradition with Burgundian refinement. Blended from a selection of single malts distilled in Scotland and matured further in the cool, humid caves of Burgundy, this whisky reveals the pioneering vision of Michel Couvreur, who believed the soul of whisky lies not just in the grain, but in the cask. The result is a richly complex, sherry-cask matured spirit that reflects both its Scottish origins and French craftsmanship.

Sensory :

This whisky opens with a deep, sherried nose of dried figs, sultanas, cocoa powder, and roasted nuts, layered with earthy peat and a touch of leather. On the palate, it balances power and finesse, dark chocolate, raisins, and candied orange peel mingle with smoky undertones, oak spice, and subtle herbal accents. The texture is full and round, with a long, warming finish defined by lingering notes of dried fruit, sherry richness, and a whisper of coastal salinity.

Distiller’s Background:

Michel Couvreur began his career in Burgundy’s wine trade before turning his vision toward whisky in 1978. Convinced that oak maturation was the true heart of whisky, he sourced distillates from Scotland and aged them in sherry oak casks inside Burgundian caves, applying his winemaking expertise to the whisky world. His methods, favoring toasted oak over charred barrels, were groundbreaking, and they imparted an elegance and depth unique to his whiskies. Following his passing in 2013, his son-in-law and former cellar master have carried on his legacy, ensuring that each release reflects both Scottish authenticity and Burgundian artistry.

Serving Suggestions:

Best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass at room temperature to appreciate its full aromatic range. A few drops of water can open the whisky further, highlighting its fruit and spice layers. Pair it with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, or aged cheeses for a decadent experience, or savor slowly as a contemplative after-dinner dram.

Michel Couvreur Overaged Malt Whisky is a remarkable marriage of Scottish distillation and French maturation, an elegant and powerful spirit that proves Couvreur’s pioneering belief: oak defines the whisky.
