The Merlot Cabernet DOC Soma 2023 from Kurtatsch Winery is a powerful, characterful red blend from the Überetsch‑Unterland in South Tyrol, combining classic Bordeaux influences with regional expression. The grape composition is 60 % Merlot, 30 % Cabernet Franc, and 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon, giving the wine a perfect balance of fruit, spice, and structure. In the glass, the Soma 2023 shows a deep ruby color with dense reflections, visually hinting at its depth. The blend marries the fruit-forward softness of Merlot with the elegant spice and structural backbone of the Cabernets. On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet of ripe forest berries, blackcurrants, cherries, and plums, complemented by subtle herbal and spicy notes. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and juicy, with well-integrated tannins providing balance and aging potential. The combination of fruit, spice, and elegant complexity makes it highly versatile.Vinification involves controlled-temperature fermentation in rotating tanks, followed by 12 months aging in French barriques, with additional maturation in concrete, adding depth, smoothness, and a harmonious mouthfeel. On the palate, the Soma 2023 is warm, powerful, and elegant. Its present tannins and ripe fruit provide excellent cellar potential, with optimal drinking maturity between 3 and 10 years after harvest.
