Description

Château Mouton Rothschild 1968 – Pauillac, Premier Grand Cru Classé

The 1968 Château Mouton Rothschild is a rare vintage from one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates, produced during a challenging year in the Médoc. Although the estate was officially elevated to First Growth (Premier Grand Cru Classé) status in 1973, its earlier vintages—like this one—already carried the grandeur, ambition, and identity that define Mouton Rothschild.

The 1968 vintage was marked by a cool, wet summer, leading to a small and delicate harvest. Despite these conditions, the Mouton team demonstrated remarkable precision and dedication, crafting a wine that reflects the house’s style: refined, elegant, and expressive, even in a difficult year.

After more than five decades of aging, the wine displays a brick-red robe with mahogany highlights. The nose is subtle and evolved, offering notes of blond tobacco, forest floor, dried fruits, old leather, cedar, and gentle spice. On the palate, the texture is smooth and mellow, with fully integrated tannins and a graceful, soft finish that lingers with quiet complexity.

The Château Mouton Rothschild 1968 is now primarily appreciated as a collector’s bottle—a wine of history and legacy rather than raw power. It represents the enduring elegance of a great name that maintained character and craftsmanship, even in less favorable vintages.
