Description
Château Fonbadet 1947 – A Historic Pauillac from a Legendary Vintage
Nestled among some of the most prestigious classified growths of Pauillac, Château Fonbadet draws its strength from deep gravel soils and a long-standing family tradition rooted in the Médoc. Though not part of the 1855 classification, Fonbadet is often regarded as an “insider’s cru”, delivering wines that are powerful, authentic, and deeply expressive of their terroir.
The 1947 vintage is one of the most legendary of the 20th century in Bordeaux. Marked by a long, hot, and dry summer, it allowed for exceptional ripeness and unparalleled concentration. At Fonbadet, this solar vintage produced a structured, generous wine built for long aging.
Now, more than 75 years later, Château Fonbadet 1947 presents a deep mahogany robe with brick and amber reflections. The nose is complex and fully evolved, offering layers of noble leather, precious woods, forest floor, dried fig, prune, sweet spices, and cigar box. On the palate, it is silky and harmonious, with fully integrated tannins, velvety texture, and a still-vibrant acidity that brings balance and freshness. The finish is long, smooth, and filled with quiet, contemplative depth.
This wine is a monument of Médoc history, a rare witness to a mythical vintage. It deserves to be savored slowly and respectfully — with a refined dish such as roasted beef tenderloin, truffled poultry, or simply on its own, in silent appreciation.
