The Malterdinger Chardonnay 2022 from Bernhard Huber in Baden is an outstandingly structured, dry white wine made from the classic Chardonnay grape variety, renowned worldwide for its versatility and its potential to produce great white wines. In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a bright pale golden colour with clear reflections. On the nose, it reveals an elegant, finely reductive aromatic profile with notes of white peach, green pear, ripe lime and a delicate hint of light hazelnut, framed by subtle barrique-driven spice and a discreet minerality reminiscent of limestone soils. On the palate, the 2022 vintage impresses with precise, vibrant acidity and an invigorating saline edge, giving the wine both freshness and persistence. Its fruity finesse – carried by citrus and white-fruit aromas – combines with a clear structure and a lively, dynamic character that is typical of well-ripened Chardonnay from the shell-limestone terroir around Malterdingen. Taut yet harmonious, the wine shows remarkable balance between fruit, acidity and texture. The Malterdinger Chardonnay is vinified as a single-varietal Ortswein: the grapes are pressed as whole clusters, fermentation proceeds spontaneously, and ageing takes place entirely in barrique, with a significant proportion in new oak. This traditional, oak-influenced vinification adds further complexity, depth and an elegant length on the finish.
